Great Blue Heron Rookey 2023
We visited a Great Blue Heron (GBH) rookery (protected) yesterday observing beginning of annual nest building activities. Always an interesting time as these majestic birds go through the ritual of nesting. The local rookery is a reusable 'colonial' nesting zone for the Great Blue Heron's (in Washington state). These 'colonial or 'heronries'; nesting grounds will continue to be used and maintained all year long, every year which may be used by many GBH families. As seen in the photographs, 'branch sharing' is a usually a sign of social nesting, cooperative nesting, or even mating behavior. Always an interesting sight to watch and they build and maintain these nests. GBH like quiet and high locations or spaces but with urban expansion everywhere we see them at many urban rivers, Puget Sound, and wetland areas. If you come upon them, be respectful and view from a distance if possible. But enjoy these great birds!
